Czerwony Klasztor ( The Red Monastery)

Czerwony Klasztor (The Red Monastery) is one of the most famous religious buildings located in the Pieniny Mountains and its history dates back to the 14th century.
Construction of the monastery (first called Lechnický) began in 1330. Initially the monastery buildings were made of wood. However, in 1360 they were replaced by brick and stone buildings, erected according to the principles of the Gothic style. The building was named the "Red Monastery" after the colour of the originally unplastered walls. The history of the monastery was very turbulent - it struggled with numerous invasions, changes of owners, as well as expansions under the Camaldolese regime, thanks to which it gained its now historic polychrome and new baroque interior with a beautiful altar. Also outstanding book works come from this period. In 1907 the monastery burned down. Its reconstruction started after the First World War. From 1955 to 1966 construction work was carried out on the monastery. Some of the buildings have been used as museums since 1966. The most impressive building of the complex is the Gothic Church of St. Anthony from the end of the 14th century, which was largely reconstructed in the Baroque style. It is worthwhile to visit the Red Monastery on foot or by bike along the Pieniny path along the Dunajec river. It is a picturesque route, ideal for families, from which we can admire the beauty of the Pieniny nature, and in the season we can go rafting down the Dunajec river. The monastery can also be reached by car.
